Internship Details
The Salisbury Zoo currently offers unpaid internships to college-age and above individuals for the fall, spring and summer seasons. Our internships require a minimum commitment of 15 hours a week. Fall internships run September through the end of December. Spring internships run January through the end of May. Summer internships run June through the end of August.
Internships are offered in the following areas: education, animal keeper and the animal hospital. Each area offers opportunities to be exposed to real-life zoo experiences.
In order to assist in your continued education, we are willing to work with school advisers to offer the needed documentation to obtain credit for the internship.
Job Descriptions
Education interns work with the education staff to provide care, create diets, and assist in enrichment and training for the ambassador animal collection. Interns also are trained to present ambassadors for the public through a variety of programs.
Keeper interns work with zookeepers to provide care, make diets and clean exhibits. Interns will be given the opportunity to assist with enrichment creation and implementation. Other duties as assigned might involve afternoon projects, training behaviors or assisting with medical procedures. Keeper interns must be able to work morning (8 a.m.-noon) and/or afternoon (1-5 p.m.) shifts during the week and weekend.
Animal hospital interns assist our veterinary staff in maintaining medical records, with care of hospitalized animals, and with hospital maintenance. They will be given the opportunity to shadow medical exams and procedures, with the possibility to assist. To be considered for an internship in the hospital, you must have prior hands-on animal experience.
