SALISBURY, Md. — The Salisbury Zoo recently conducted routine health exams on its bison herd to ensure the animals remain healthy and thriving. The procedures were led by the zoo’s on-staff veterinarian, with support from visiting veterinary staff from the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore and the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. Additionally local hoof trimmer David Szelestei trimmed their hooves. Zoo field operations and animal care staff assisted, following strict safety protocols throughout.
The exams included thorough physical evaluations, species-specific diagnostics such as bloodwork and fecal testing, and regular health maintenance including vaccinations and parasite prevention. The zoo’s veterinary team determines procedures and frequency to ensure bison health and welfare meet Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) standards.
Thanks to careful planning, teamwork, and adherence to safety protocols, the exams were completed successfully, and the bison were found to be healthy and thriving.
